A yearly campaign is back to raise awareness about breast cancer. October is the national recognition month, emphasizing the importance of regular screening mammograms.

Union Hospital’s Breast Care Coordinator Raena Beans says both men and women are at risk of developing breast cancer.

“Roughly 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. Breast cancer is not something that is limited to women. It’s really non-discriminate.”

Those with a family history of breast cancer are advised to start screening between the ages 30 to 35. Those with no family history should schedule yearly mammograms beginning at 40.

Beans also recommends monthly self-checks for possible symptoms.

“You should just be feeling for any kind of changes, like if you notice you have a lump or something that doesn’t feel quite right, pain, tenderness, any kind of changes, as well as any kind of physical changes even if it’s redness or itching.”

Union Hospital hosts the Paint Tusc Pink campaign, which encourages businesses and organizations to raise awareness by decorating or contacting the hospital’s relations department for a yard sign.
