The Tuscarawas County Health Department is reminding residents of mosquito prevention with their first spraying.
Mike Kopko, with TCHD’s Environmental Bureau, says they place traps for routine surveillance.
“Throughout the county in the political subdivisions that have opted in we set traps that lure mosquitos in and then the next day we count them to see how many there are in that location.”
200 or more in one trap prompts TCHD to take preventative action and spray.
Spraying is being conducted in Fairfield Township on Wednesday and then on Thursday in the City of Dover, both from 8 to 11pm, weather permitting.
Kopko notes that residents can also take action to prevent mosquito breeding conditions.
“If there are standing water or flowerpots, gutters, buckets, pool covers, and more. If those containers are full of water, standing water, for long periods of times mosquitos lay their eggs in water.”
Prevention can also include wear long sleeved shirts or pants and using insect repellent. Peak mosquito hours are from dusk to dawn.
