Two more measles cases have been confirmed in Tuscarawas County, bringing the county’s total to three in less than a week.
The Tuscarawas County Health Department reported the second case Tuesday afternoon, followed a short time later by confirmation of a third case. Health officials say all three residents were not vaccinated against measles and range in age from 15 months to 19 years old.
One of the newly confirmed patients was exposed at Smokey Lane Stables on July 17th. The other was exposed while attending the Bloomfield Livestock Auction in Bloomfield on July 18th. The health department says it is still waiting on additional lab results connected to suspected cases.
Tuscarawas County Health Commissioner Katie Seward addressed the situation after last week’s case, which was the first confirmed in the county since 2010.
Measles is highly contagious. Health officials say two doses of the MMR vaccine are about 97-percent effective at preventing the disease.
Anyone with symptoms including fever, cough, runny nose, red or watery eyes, followed by a rash, should call their healthcare provider before going to a medical facility to help prevent exposing others.
