A more detailed assessment related to January’s snow fall will occur after the state released counties eligible for the Disaster Relief Program.
Tuscarawas County Emergency Management Agency Director Jennifer James says they were able to qualify at the state level and recently Governor Mike DeWine authorized the use of the SDRP to support 11 counties impacted by the January 24th through 27th storm.
“It was from Winter Storm Fern and because we had a record amount or near record amount of snowfall within that period that was allotted by the governor. Your government building, jurisdictions, critical private non-profits, those are the eligible candidates and basically what it does is if we hit a per capita of roughly $450,000 in damages throughout the process we can start the process.”
The next step will be for a more detailed assessment related to additional costs like snowplows and the extra hours, and first responders doing more.
James adds that they have submitted a request related to the March windstorm that hit Tuscarawas County, which toppled trees and blew off roofs and siding on some businesses.
“I can tell you a rough estimate from the windstorm, the county saw about $700,000 worth of damages at the public level.”
The Tuscarawas EMA is still awaiting a response.
