Tuscarawas County Sheriff Orvis Campbell is promoting the benefits of the county sheriff’s office app and its Reverse 911 feature.
He says the system proved valuable during last month’s standoff in Midvale. Dispatchers used Reverse 911 to send emergency notifications only to residents within about a half-mile of the July 25 incident.
Campbell says the targeted system is designed for localized emergencies, while broader notifications, such as Amber Alerts, can still be sent to the entire county.
In addition to emergency alerts, users can choose to provide optional medical information (including allergies or medical conditions, to assist first responders.
The system also allows people to register additional addresses, such as the home of a family member they visit frequently.
