“Sound the Alarm”, an American Red Cross program, has expanded to Tuscarawas County.

The program aims to ensure that county residents have working and properly installed smoke alarms in their homes.

Strasburg Fire Chief Steven Laskey says up-to-date smoke alarms are crucial in case of a fire.

“This is your first line of defense and the first notification if there’s a fire. House fires claim seven lives every day and most of those are being found to be just a lack of smoke detectors or any type of warning device in the home.”

Residents of Carroll, Harrison, Holmes, Stark, Tuscarawas, and Wayne counties are eligible to request free smoke alarms through the program.

Those looking to receive smoke alarms can contact any fire department in eligible counties to be put on the list.
