May is Lyme Disease Awareness Month, and the Tuscarawas County Health Department is reminding residents to take steps to prevent tick bites and recognize early symptoms.

State data show Lyme disease is most common in East Central Ohio, with Tuscarawas County averaging nearly 60 cases per 100-thousand residents each year over the past decade.

Health Department Public Relations Director Jennifer Demuth says anyone who develops a rash or fever after a tick bite should see their doctor, noting that symptoms of Lyme disease can often resemble the flu.

The department is sharing tips throughout the month on how to safely remove ticks and how to reduce exposure, including avoiding wooded areas, using insect repellent with DEET, and performing full-body tick checks after spending time outdoors.

As part of the awareness effort, the health department will also give out free tick removal kits during its open house on May 19TH.
