Tuscarawas Valley Local School’s cheerleading coach praises her team ahead of competitions in January.
At the latest Board of Education meeting, Katie Spinell says there are 17 high school students in cheerleading, with 15 of them also competing on one or both of the district’s competitive teams.
“All 17 are extremely dedicated. They practice three times a week, cheering at games, and on most weekends, you’ll find them at games or competitions. What makes them even more impressive is how involved they are outside of cheerleading. Our athletes participate in speech, theatre, pep club, volleyball, choir, track, they even hold jobs and juggle many other activities. Despite that full plate, they ended the first nine weeks with an amazing team GPA of 3.65.”
Spinell says this year they hosted a fundraising cheer competition at Tusky Valley.
“We welcomed over 20 school districts, and our team earned over $10,000. That was profited after we paid our bills from it. Our booster club ran our concession stand and they profited over $7,000.”
The middle school and two high school teams are getting ready for the IVC cheerleading competition on January 17th at Strasburg High School.
