Mary Alice Reporting –

Through a partnership, the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail will be expanded this summer.

The portion is a two mile stretch from Old Zoarville Road to the Dover Dam and is currently inaccessible through the end of September.

The partnership between the Ohio & Erie Canalway Coalition, Tuscarawas County Commissioner’s and the Park Department, as well as, the Kimble Company, since they own the property where the multi-use trail will be placed.

Park Director Jesse Rothacher says construction of the path will be on an old railroad bed.

“It hasn’t been in use for a number of years as an active railroad and with modern standards, design and engineering, there’s a lot of work to be put in to establish a good base for the trail, a nice wide surface clear of obstruction.”

The goal is to continue the trail into Dover that has the goal of eventually connecting with New Philadelphia.
