Mary Alice Reporting –

Mayor Jim Zucal provided an update to council during the regular Thursday meeting on items including having an early audit, new LED lighting, and bringing in commerce.

Outside of weekly staff meetings, Zucal met with two veterans who expressed an interest in helping with the Haverfield Memorial.

Zucal also talked with Fred Vogel, with the Ohio Department of Transportation.

“He’s responsible for jobs a commerce, and growth and industry in the travel sector with traffic. We discussed Newport Road, Wardell Street, and the downtown, and this is regarding improvements to streets and the infrastructure to allow industrial growth and business growth.”

Administration also met with representatives with Public Entities Pool regarding risk assessments in the city and they have applied for a grant for a “your speed is” sign that if obtained, would be placed on Easport Avenue near the Claymont Primary School.

The Mayor also indicated that AEP will place new LED street lights on Commerce Drive to potentially curb the tires and trash being dumped in the area.

“With new LED lights and poles, we’re looking at a grid of about six poles and we’re also looking at assessing all the streets lights in the city. What’s used, not being used, what’s on or not on, what has LED, and we’re also going to probably add a few down by the water park.”

Zucal rounded out his report to update council on work for the McCauley Drive BellStores rebuild project, with the company requesting an alley to be vacated. They have also agreed to take out Gardner Street and then replace it with concrete.
