Uhrichsville council votes to remove ordinance that would have ended cosmetic standards for the downtown district.

At the February 12th meeting, councilman Robert Baker presented legislation to rescind ordinance 12-23, which would have removed downtown design policies. Mayor Jim Zucal spoke out against this, saying it would be detrimental to the downtown, the clay theme, and historical significance.

At the most recent meeting, visitors from the Twin City Chamber of Commerce and the Clay Capital Heritage Center spoke, include former councilwoman Amy Myers.

“I caution you to rescind an ordinance when you don’t have anything to replace it, and if the ordinance needs tweaked or addendums that’s what you should work on.”

Rita McPeak asked council to amend the existing ordinance instead of repealing.

“Clearly the current ordinance could use some updating, improving, but simply rescinding it and having no standards whatsoever I really am very uncomfortable with.”

Before a vote, Baker made a motion to table ordinance 1-26.

“I talked to both Mr. Miller and Ms. Colvin and we have decided I’m going to make a motion to withdraw that ordinance 1-26.”

Baker says he will get input from downtown businesses, and then a suggestion was made to have an open community meeting on the matter. A date has yet to be announced.
