The national campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids is asking for the cooperation of parents and teachers in steering children away from vaping as they prepare for classes to resume.

Brian King, the campaign’s executive vice president for U.S. Programs, says that includes talking to kids about the dangers and keeping an eye out for the various – and sometimes deceptive – forms of the devices.

“Some of the newer varieties of these are resembling gaming devices and smartphones, and also some that resemble everyday objects like highlighters. The way that the products are designed coupled with promotions including through social media is driving the youth.”

Past campaign president and school nurse Kate King encourages adults to look out for signs of using in their kids, such as changes in mood and behavior, along with sleeping and eating patterns.

While there’s been a decline in overall tobacco use among kids over the past 25 years, there are still more than two million children using tobacco products, including 1.6 million using e-cigarettes.
