Mary Alice Reporting –

More details have been released following a chain of events that led to a Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Office deputy being injured and the suspect pronounced dead.

At around 9pm, on Sunday, 911 received a call about a vehicle crashing into a house at the intersection of 8th Street NE and Fair Avenue, in New Philadelphia.

Sheriff Orvis Campbell released that a deputy saw a man walking and attempted to engage him, but as soon as the deputy got out of the cruiser, the man jumped in the passenger side and attempted to flee.

During a struggle, shots were fired, and the deputy was injured in the hand and leg, which is not considered life-threatening. The suspect, who is not being named at this time, fled in the Sheriff’s cruiser, but crashed into a parked car at Tell Street and East High.

The suspect was transported to Union Hospital and due to the extent of injuries, was later pronounced deceased.

The Bureau of Identification and Investigation was requested by Sheriff Campbell to complete the investigation since a deputy was involved in the shooting. More details are expected as they become available in the ongoing investigation.
