Verba J. Johnson, 78, of New Philadelphia, passed away peacefully in her home on Wednesday, January 31, 2024, following a prolonged battle with Alzheimer’s Disease.
She was born in Millersburg on August 14, 1945, to the late Joseph R. and Emma E. (Schlabach) Yoder and married Harold L. “Bud” Johnson on December 23, 1972. He died on August 28, 1995.
Throughout her life she worked at several places including Alsco Anaconda, the Eagle Truck Stop as a Baker, and Kent Latex (now Kent Elastomer). Verba truly enjoyed her most recent career and the fellowship that came with being a van driver for the Amish Community. She was an avid ice cream fan and loved watching her birds through the window. Her quiet but strong nature, her gentle smile and her kindness will be remembered by all those she crossed paths with along the way.
She is survived by her children Jason E. Johnson, Eric Johnson (Tania Zaripheh), and Rachel Johnson (Kenny Lathem, fiance); her grandchildren Stormy, Nate, Bella and Elliana; her great grandson River; 2 stepsons, Damon (Colleen) Johnson and Jeff (the late Maggie) Johnson and their wonderful children and grandchildren; her siblings, Laura J. Yoder, Anna (Henry) Kline, Robert Yoder, Mabel J. Yoder, Elsie (Delbert) Borkholder, Esther (John) Borkholder, and Ada (John) Hochstetler; brother-in-law Eli L. Schrock; sisters-in-law, Linda (Jim) Karcher and Mary Ellen Yoder; and her many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by her sisters, Emma Schrock, Mary Ann Hochstetler and Edna J. Yoder; brothers, Emanuel, Melvin, and Joseph Jr.; brother-in-law Harley Hochstetler; and sister-in-law Sharon Yoder.
Services will be held on Monday, February 5, 2024, at 12:30 PM at Smith-Varns Funeral Home in Sugarcreek. Burial will follow in Union Hill Cemetery. Friends may call on Monday from 10-12 at the funeral home prior to services.
