VFW Post 1445 getting ready for Memorial Day by hosting its Hometown Hero Banner program.
The partnership is with the City of New Philadelphia and veterans in Tuscarawas County.
Post Chaplain Jerry Chenevey says another tradition is to decorate veteran graves.
“In the next week or so all of our local post’s will be out decorating the graves of all of our veterans in all of our cemeteries across the county. The Boy Scouts, church groups, we’re getting a lot of people involved.”
As for the banners, they’ll be flown in the downtown area.
“Honoring and recognizing the service men and women who have served from their communities. In New Philadelphia, this will be the third time we’ve done it and VFW Post 1445 has taken the initiative to provide all the cost for that.”
Chenevey encourages all veterans to be part of an organization like a VFW or American Legion.
“They provide the support. They provide a lot of information to congress and our legislators with regard to things that veterans need and not just the veterans but their families as well.”
He adds that the VFW Post 1445 is always accepting entries for the Hometown Hero Banner program. These need to include a sharp, non-returnable photograph, preferably the veteran in uniform, and basic information such as name, rank, branch, and when and where served.
Some banners may be flown at the VFW Post Memorial Garden located at 441 Park Avenue NW in New Philadelphia.
