A unanimous vote now requires those riding an electric bicycle or e-scooter to wear a helmet in the Village of Dennison.
The ordinance was under consideration for several readings and gained council support Wednesday evening.
Police Chief Todd Beeman says helmets are now required for all aged riders. Traffic laws also need to be followed and if traveling on the sidewalk, the speed needs to be reduced to a walking pace.
“We don’t mind that they’re out there enjoying themselves, we just want to make sure they’re safe.”
Beeman adds that education for youth and adults is key.
“We’re going to be enforcing it but we’re going to be enforcing it with education so that they understand.”
Another ordinance regarding low-speed micro mobility devices was also approved, which strengthens requirements like having a front and back light if operated on the street or sidewalk at night.
