Virgil Lewis Ours, age 87, of New Philadelphia, passed away on Tuesday, April 2, 2024, while in Schoenbrunn Health Care Center at New Philadelphia.

Born on February 16, 1937, in Rochester, Pennsylvania, Virgil was a son of the late Lewis E. and Ruth V. Hayman Ours.

Following his graduation from Wellsville High School in 1955, Virgil began work as a surveyor. However, he spent the majority of his forty-plus years career as a tire store manager having worked in Dover, Uhrichsville, Columbus, and Raleigh, North Carolina.

His interests included bowling, throwing horseshoes, baseball, and square dancing, which he and his wife, Delorse, were actively involved with for more than 30 years.

Faith and family were important to Virgil. Throughout the years, he was a member of numerous Methodist congregations where he served as Sunday School Teacher, Trustee, Usher, and was willing to lend a hand where needed. Next, he enjoyed the family gatherings and rarely missed the reunions.

He will be deeply missed by his wife of 65 years, the former Delorse Jean Everett, whom he married on November 15, 1958, their children, April (Eldon) Mathes of Kentucky Teresa (Bill) Lawver of New Philadelphia, Vernon (Debbie) Ours of South Carolina, Michael (Eileen) Ours of Macedonia, Ohio, and Patty (Dan) Brock of California; 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Completing the family are his sister, Ginny Huffman of New Jersey and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Virgil was preceded in death by a sister and brother-in-law, Isabel (Tom) Edwards, and a brother-in-law, Bill Huffman.

A celebration of Virgil’s life will be led by Pastor Harley Wheeler on Saturday, April 13, 2024, at 11:30 AM in the Broadway Global Methodist Church at New Philadelphia. The family will greet guests one hour prior to the service from 10:30 – 11:30 AM. A meal and fellowship will be shared in the church social hall immediately following the service.

Memorial contributions in Virgil’s name may be directed to Broadway Global Methodist Church, 120 Church Avenue SE, New Philadelphia, Ohio 44663.

The family would like to extend their appreciation to the staff of Schoenbrunn Health Care Center for the care they provided Virgil.
