Virginia D. Knight, 89, of Newcomerstown, Ohio, (and formerly of Columbus) passed away on May 21, 2026, at the OhioHealth Southeastern Ohio Medical Center in Cambridge.

She was born in Fairmont, West Virginia, to the late Oral Dayton and Jettie Grubb and graduated from East Fairmont High School in 1954.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Nedra and Peter Loveridge, of Virginia; daughter and grandson, Phyllis and Benjamin Bachtel, of Newcomerstown; and grandson, Corey Spring, of Columbus. She is also survived by many first- and second-generation nephews, nieces, and relatives whose family updates and hand-made cards gave her great joy.

In addition to her parents, Virginia was preceded in death by her seven siblings (and their spouses): brothers Byron (Marjorie) Grubb, Gordon (Rita) Grubb, Grant (Emma) Grubb; sisters Mary (Stanley) Munza, Bernice (Edward) Neel, Jeanette (Charles) James, and Dorothy (William) Janes. She was also predeceased by her son-in-law, Kevin Bachtel.

During her working life, Virginia was secretary at Christ United Methodist Church in Newcomerstown for Reverends John Benson and Raymond Snyder. She also worked at Bair’s Furniture and for American Hardwoods in West Lafayette. In 1987, she moved to Columbus where she was employed by Columbus Roof & Truss and then at Grandview Heights Schools until she retired in 1999.

Virginia had an artistic flair. At an early age, she learned to work with fabric and a sewing machine, designing and making her own clothes. Many knew her as a talented seamstress whose skills were sought in creating clothing and gowns for weddings, school plays, and special events. Her passions also included interior decorating, oil and watercolor painting, flower arranging, creating merchant window displays, and refurbishing rescued furniture. She shared her talents as a volunteer for the Girl Scouts, the American Cancer Society Thrift Store, and as an usher at the Columbus Palace Theater.

In keeping with Virginia’s wishes, she will be cremated without a formal funeral service or calling hours. Her family will gather privately at a future date to honor her life.
