Voters rejected a bond and tax levy for the New Philadelphia City School District. These are unofficial results, but against Issue 10 was 59% of those who voted in-person or by absentee.

This is the second time the district has placed the matter before voters in an effort to build a new K-6th grade school and a 7-12th grade middle/high school.

Superintendent Amy Wentworth says aging buildings will continue to cause issues and cost the district money.

“Our current building are not safe and they’re very difficult to maintain. New problems on a weekly basis and they’re extremely costly to try to fix. We are to the point where the state has determined that it is more expensive to remodel or fix up these building than it would to build new buildings.”

Wentworth notes one concern is the state portion of funding and building material costs will continue to rise.

“We will have a couple more chances to put this on the ballot but with rising costs it will be at a higher rate.”

The next step will be for the school to go back to more educational meetings.
