Dennison officials are hoping by changing a room name it will spark more interest as they prepare to host a performance.
Several years ago, administration cleaned out the top floor of Village Hall, and it has since been turned into an open room with a stage.
Mayor Greg DiDonato asked council to consider a name change.
“I suggested we call it Railroaders Theater or Railroaders Auditorium. I don’t think the word Railroad Room adequately sells what we’re trying to do. I think auditorium because it means people can use it for other things.”
They settled on Railroaders Auditorium.
Now, thanks to many upgrades, the play Jesus Christ Superstar will be performed June 19th, 20th, and 21st.
The Waterford Players is a non-profit working to increase performing arts opportunities in southern Tuscarawas County. Founder Laura Gray says the production will be on the 3rd floor of Dennison Village Hall.
“And the really exciting thing about this is it’s not only our first musical it’ll also be the first production that we’re putting on a very upgraded theatrical space. It’s lots of costume changes and it’s technically a rock opera so non-stop music. There’s no spoken lines it’s all music.”
Gray says the Friday and Saturday performances start at 7pm and Sunday is at 3pm. Doors open half an hour prior and it’s general seating.
Gray also commends the volunteer cast for their work in rehearsals.
“It’s a really incredible cast. We have around 20 so all of them except Jesus and Judas are playing two to five characters in the show. they have worked so very hard for this show.”
Tickets are $20 and can be pre-purchased by finding the link on the Waterford Players Facebook page. Some tickets may be available at the door.
Gray notes this production may not be for all ages since it does depict the crucifixion of Jesus along with physical violence.
