Mary Alice Reporting –
A working smoke detector is attributed to a homeowner’s quick response in calling first responders.
Dover Fire units responded at 8:30am to 330 W. 4th Street after a neighbor told the homeowner the alarm was sounding and they observed smoke.
Captain Joe Minocchi says when they arrived on scene, they saw the smoke coming from the house.
“We got inside, started looking around, took us a couple of minutes to find the fire but it was in an oven. There had been a box of donuts in the oven. The oven inadvertently appears to have gotten turned on, and that’s what started the fire.”
The oven suffered a small amount of damage. No one was injured.
Minocchi stresses the key take away is that the resident was alerted to the blaze thanks to the alarm.
“It’s a good point that smoke detectors do save lives and you got to make sure they’re in working operation and working order and it worked out really well in this situation.”
Responding in mutual aid was Smith Ambulance and fire departments from New Philadelphia, Strasburg, and Bolivar.
