The Tuscarawas Valley Film Festival starts up for another season Thursday night at the Quaker Cinema in New Philadelphia.
Quaker owner Mike Ernest says it will feature two independent movies each Thursday through September, except for the final week when they’ll have three movies.
He says getting the rights to these films isn’t the same as showing films from the major studios.
“This is a different world in that you’re often dealing with the film maker, so you’re reliant upon them to get back with you and sometimes it’s immediately, they are thanking you for reaching out, and other times they just completely ignore your request.”
The festival starts at 6:30 with a documentary about Appalachian boxers called Country Brawlers. That will be followed at 8pm by the comedy ‘Thelma,’ about a 93-year-old woman who was scammed out of 10-thousand dollars by a con artist on the phone.
Ernest says the film festival again this year serves as a fundraiser for the local Big Brothers Big Sisters organization. Tickets, either $10 or $30, are available at www.quakercinema.com. He notes that these films will be shown on one side of the theatre and the other side will still show current movies.
