Gwen Rummell Reporting –
Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a type of depression that affects people in the fall and winter months due to changes in seasons.
The main reasons behind the mood disorder are changes in the body’s internal clock, affected sleep patterns, and reduced light.
Empower Tusc Coordinator Jodi Salvo says there are clear symptoms associated with SAD.
“When it happens – what they might first notice is low energy, moodiness, sleeping in, difficulty concentrating, and changes in appetite.”
Salvo adds that the best course of action to take is to see a professional.
“Reach out to your medical provider on your feelings. After you see your medical provider, they can provide that affective diagnosis, whether that is seasonal affective disorder or maybe there is some other medical health challenges happening.”
The stress associated with the holiday season can also worsen mood.
Those feeling increased amounts of depression can contact the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
